OHTO was formed in 1985 by Jon Phillips as a direct response to the experience of one of his friends, who was unable to get roadside assistance or recovery when their horsebox broke down on the way home from a show. Specialist equestrian cover did not exist at that time, and none of the major motoring organisations would attend a vehicle carrying horses.
